What is adjusted age for premature babies?
Adjusted (corrected) age accounts for prematurity. If a baby was born 8 weeks early and is now 20 weeks old, their adjusted age is 12 weeks. Paediatricians use adjusted age for developmental milestones until around age 2.
When do babies start sleeping through the night?
Most babies can sleep 6-8 hours by 3-4 months, though every baby is different. By 6 months, about 60% of babies sleep through consistently. Australian guidelines from the RCH recommend safe sleep practices from birth.
When should my baby start solids?
Australian dietary guidelines (NHMRC) recommend introducing solids at around 6 months, but not before 4 months. Signs of readiness include sitting upright with support, showing interest in food, and loss of the tongue-thrust reflex.
What immunisations does my baby need?
The Australian National Immunisation Program (NIP) provides free vaccinations at 2, 4, 6, 12, and 18 months, and at 4 years. Check the immunisation schedule at health.gov.au or your child's Blue Book.
