Frequently Asked Questions
What is the lethal dose of caffeine?
The commonly cited lethal dose (LD50) is approximately 150-200mg per kilogram of body weight. For a 75kg person, that is roughly 11,250-15,000mg. However, serious side effects can occur at much lower doses (around 400-500mg for some people).
Can you actually die from caffeine?
Caffeine overdose deaths are extremely rare but have occurred, usually from caffeine pills or powder, not beverages. Your stomach would likely reject the volume of liquid long before you reached a dangerous dose from coffee or energy drinks.
How much caffeine is safe per day?
Health authorities generally recommend no more than 400mg per day for healthy adults — roughly 3-4 cups of coffee. Pregnant women are advised to stay under 200mg. Children and teenagers should consume significantly less.
